Before independence, in Mumbai (previously Bombay), Indian Satta, also called Matka, had its beginnings. The working class began to play the game more frequently, and it soon spread to include horse racing & cricket wagering. The game was outlawed by the Indian government in the 1960s, pushing it underground.
